If not for the humor, I might have been crying (as it was, I got a bit teary eyed in some parts).ĭID I MENTION THAT THIS SHOW IS CHOKING FROM AN OVERLOAD OF FANSERVICE?! Not that it really kills the show, but I just thought I'd mention it. The mixing of the serious story that is tied to the real world and the humor/parody that takes place throughout most of the show allows you to put that seriousness in a manageable perspective. In other news, if you didn't get at least 10 of the parody references (and you will know if you got them or not) you need to play more video games and watch more movies and anime and such. ![]() ![]() And it is also a thread that ties all of the parody worlds together (MuneMune chasing after Eutus and all that). I won't go into the Heian love turbulence, but rest assured it is there. The one I refer to was the ritual to bring Mune and Masayuki back to life - but it couldn't be done in his contemporary world and instead they were reborn into 21st century Abenobashi. Sasshi finally wants to stop being a kid, and in the final episode calls forth Abeno to show himself (that is, Sasshi) as an adult instead of a child (thus the Yasuchika transformation which allows him to fix the Tai_ that Abe no Seimei had apparently botched). Sasshi's personal denial of Masa-jii's death was the cause of this, and Arumi's witnessing it (as well as repressing it afterwards) are adding to the theme of escapism. Sasshi finds out at some point in the show that Arumi's grandfather's death was the cataclyst that send them soaring through these other worlds. The deus ex machina at the end is obviously under contention by fans, but since we are dealing with reincarnations from a misperformed Onmyouji ritual (by no other than Abe no Seimei, or Abe, or Eutus, depending on what time period), it is only natural that Sasshi would be the reincarnation of the strongest Onmyouji of all time, Yasuchika (interesting). The spoiler - Arumi's grandfather had died in the real world. In many ways, this anime is about growing up and not escaping, but the end result is, in effect, an escape from the reality that existed at the beginning of the show. ![]() Naturally, this makes Sasshi very sad, as he obviously cares very much for Arumi - thus bringing us to the theme of "escapism," since he is willing to go to world after world to avoid the one that he does not like. More in depth: Sasshi and Arumi (childhood friends) are about to be separated Arumi's father is moving the family to Hokkaido to open a new French cookery and leaving behind Sasshi, his family and the Abenobashi Shopping Arcade - which is currently being torn down for new plans. Sure, I had problems with it, because it did seem to be too good of a solution you have to realize that he didn't just solve his own problems with it, but also the problem from the Heian era too. It didn't seem sudden because they had been dropping hints all along about back story and what happened in the real world and, keeping in mind the pacing and what one comes to expect, it did fit to some extent. Other than that, there are often complaints such as the ending was too sudden, didn't fit, was rushed, worked out too well and all of that jazz, but I think differently. The opening and ending song are a good mix of an upbeat catchy song (opening) and a slow kind of wistful tune that stays stuck in your head for hours after hearing it (ending), so points there too. Let's see, in an overall sense, the things I liked about it: The animation style when they were serious was absolutely gorgeous (otherwise, it was a playful style, and rather smooth and such, but the serious moments = best visuals). Now for the CUT! By the way, it makes more sense if you watched it, since I jump around quite a bit to explain things that I feel like explaining. These other worlds are all a product of Sasshi's active otaku imagination, so it turns out to be an amazing parody-explosion of gags and such this doesn't mean that the show is all fun and games, and the underlying story is rather serious. Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi / Abenobashi Mahou Shotengai (アベノ橋魔法商店街) episodes 1-13: (fansubs by KAA)Ībenobashi (for short) is comprised of 13 episodes and is the story of Sasshi and Arumi, a boy and girl from Abenobashi in Osaka (the city itself) who get transported to other versions of Abenobashi. ![]()
